HITMEN 36 CRADLEY 53

Sunday July 06, 2014
Any thoughts that National League leaders Cradley Heathens may have had that they needed just to turn up for the points were quickly dismissed by a fast starting Hitmen side who up until heat 7 were level with the title favourites.

It was a day of ‘firsts’ for Buxton as heat two saw the first maximum heat win of the season as well as the first time that the black and white helmet colour wasn’t needed as the gap between the sides didn’t begin to widen until the latter heats when a couple of falls from Ryan Blacklock and Liam Carr hindered the home side’s progress.

‘On the face of it we have gone backwards from last week’ said Buxton Boss Jayne Moss ‘but these are real points no double ups and the overall performance was good.’

Veteran Tony Atkin lead the way for the Hitmen with an 11 point hall with solid back-up from Liam Carr and Tom Woolley who both scored 7. Adam Extance continued his recent string of good performances with a season best 6.

Newcomer Sam Ward impressed on his debut and although a first heat fall stopped him scoring his first NL point there was plenty of cause for optimism. ‘I enjoyed it I felt the track got better as the meeting went on and it was tricky in the first few heats but generally I was happy at my first attempt’ commented the Staffordshire youngster.

Tom Perry top scored for the visitors with 14 with Paul Starke and Max Clegg contributing double figure hauls. Overall Cradley’s greater strength in depth won the day.

The Hitmen now face a two week break until the visit of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers on Sunday 20th July.
